Spring Again

My Seventh Spring recording West Virginia Wildflowers. I have made several trips in the past week to my favorite locations and have seen many of my favorite Spring Ephemerals. Below are a few so that we can keep up with bloom dates.

Botanising from SC to WV in One Day

During a family vacation in the Carolinas, I had the opportunity to visit the

Anne Springs Close Greenway, a private Nature Preserve in Fort Mill, SC.
I was there early Friday morning and when we arrived home Friday evening, I headed to the Brush Creek Preserve near my home in WV. It's interesting to see the variety and similarities that 2400 feet elavation difference and 200 miles separation makes. At Anne Springs, I saw Catesby Trillium (Trillium catesbaei) along with several others.

The whole time I was in SC, I was worried I would miss peak bloom at Brush Creek. But, I hit it perfect this evening. Below are WV pctures

Purpose

In 2013, I started this blog to photograph and record every wildflower that I can in West Virginia for one year. In that one year, I was able to find and photograph 308 wildflowers. These include natives, tree, shrubs and introduced flowers that have been here awhile and are here to stay. I was inspired to do this after reading several books about orchids and birding.

Now, in 2014 and the future, I am adding flowers that I missed in the past hope to create a pretty comprehensive list of WV wildflowers.

Why don't I use proper scientific names ?

It has been suggested that I should use scientific names for the flowers that I identify. I could do that by using Google, but, when I read blogs or forums that use only scientific names I get frustrated, I have to Google it to see if the author is referring to Nodding Ladies Tresses or Shining Ladies Tresses or maybe Slender Ladies Tresses. I cannot remember all of them, so I plan to use the most common name for this region but I am going to try to make every common name a link to the USDA Plants Profile page for that plant. There you will see the scientific name, range maps and other useful info. Thanks for your interest.
